On August 20, 1882, Pastor Dowidat was called to serve the congregation as its pastor and Mr. Herman Gruel was called as the first principal and teacher of its Christian Day School. Plans for a church building proceeded quickly. The church building would be about 42 by 65 feet with a tower about 16 feet square and 100 feet high. The total cost would be $4,320.00. On December 10, the congregation moved into the new building and gave glory to God in special worship. Formal dedication of the building was delayed, however, until July 22, the Sunday closest to the day on which separation from the former congregation had taken place. By this time a church choir had been formed to participate in the celebration.

The finalized plans called for a stone Gothic structure with a seating capacity of about 550 worshipers. Connected to the church was a fellowship hall providing a 34 by 65 foot area for assembly and recrea-tional purposes. Built of Lannon stone, laid in a random ashlar bond and ornamented with Valder’s limestone, a natural beauty has been achieved which at once impresses with its mass as well as its rugged solidity. This rugged firmness in the massive walls and strong, projecting butt¬resses is especially emphasized in the front entrance and the tower.

In 1882 there was only one WELS church in Oshkosh. Today there are six (Grace, Immanuel, Faith, Bethlehem, Martin Luther, Living Water), a University Chapel (Rising Son), two day schools (Grace, Martin Luther) and one area high school (Winnebago Lutheran Academy, Fond du Lac).

In 1922 a Sunday school was organized to provide Christian training particularly for children who were unable to attend the Christian Day School.

Chrismons (CHRISt+MONogram) were first developed by a woman from a church in Danville, Virginia. She originated them in 1957 when she set out to create decorations appropriate for a church Christmas tree. Some Chrismons designs are simple. Others are new explanations of God's constant presence in our ever changing world; and some are combinations of several elements, old and new.

In August 1882, the congregation authorized the purchase of the corner property on Ninth and Nebraska streets for $2,500.00. Making use of an existing building on the newly purchased property, Grace had a school building even before it had a church in which to worship! The first enrollment was beyond all expectation, and already on September 13th the school building was found to be too small. Two weeks later the enrollment stood at 65, and by November 28th there were 82 pupils who were taught by a single teacher.

There were now 169 children—about 70 percent of the school-age children—enrolled in the Grace Day School and crowded conditions in the old structure became acute. A new building was planned; the old building was razed in 1957 and a new one rose in its place.

In 1999, ministry was further extended by adding a three-year-old preschool program to the existing four-year-old program, and establishing a full-day Kindergarten class. There were 16 children in the three & four-year-old program and 160 in K-8, for a total of 176 students.

Athletics are an extension of our curriculum and program of Christian instruction and training. The foremost purpose of athletics is to help your child grow as a disciple of Christ. Athletics and athletic competition are designed to help the young Christian athlete develop in his relationship to God, to others, and to himself. As the experiences of success and failures are encountered, we strive to help the youngster deal with them in a way that brings glory to his Savior. The development of a “team spirit,” a work ethic, and the ability to set priorities are examples of the goals we have for our program.

In 1944, the Bethesda Women’s Auxiliary was formed. Its purpose was “to acquaint the younger women—many of whom had husbands in the armed forces—with each other; with the educational, missionary, and charitable work of the Wisconsin Synod, and with Bethesda Lutheran Home.” Bethesda merged with the Lutheran Women’s Mission Society in 1988 and has since become LWMS.

Men’s Club was organized in 1924. It’s purpose was to serve the congregation in areas of need and promote Christian fellowship and social activities for the men of the congregation.

“Steadfast in God’s Word”

Grace Lutheran School considers the instruction of Christian doctrine as outlined by Luther’s Small Catechism to be a part of our religious curriculum and therefore a requirement of all students attending our school. This instruction also serves to prepare youth of Grace Lutheran Congregation for communicant membership. Confirmation is a rite of the church and a ceremony by which a person enters into the communicant membership of a particular congregation.
